ZWave security and safety sensor

Monitor when doors and windows are opened or closed. Check remotely and on-demand.
Understanding when a door or window opens or closes is one of the most powerful pieces of knowledge within an automation system. You can use it to power security and safety systems. You can also use it to power intelligent automation, turning electronics on and off depending on how a room is used.
Door / Window Sensor 7 from Aeotec uses leading Gen7 and Z-Wave Plus technology to deliver a whole lot of intelligence and reliability in one slim, German-engineered package.
While it’s called a door or window sensor, in reality it can be attached to any object that opens or closes. That means you an use it to monitor other objects such as;
alcohol cabinetsmedicine cabinets drawerschests
Once it notifies your Z-Wave gateway that an object has been opened or closed, your automation software can execute a huge range of intelligent reactions including;
turning lights on or off based on room useturning heating or air conditioning off when windows are opened, and turning them back on when windows are closedsending notifications when private areas are entered or off-limits objects openedmanaging security and safety alerts and alarms when doors or windows are opened

Wireless maximum
To be simple to install, it has to be wireless. To secure your home, its engineering has to be perfected. Door / Window Sensor 7 Pro is powered by the speed enhancements that come from Z-Wave Plus and Z-Wave S2 enabling it to wireless communicate 50% faster and up to 67% further in real-world use

Incredibly small, but great responsibility
The 3-1 Door / Window Sensor 7 is 44.3% smaller than its predecessors but wholly re-engineered. It’s the first security sensor engineered in Germany and designed in Silicon Valley and is structured around an all-new elastic, bayonet architecture allowing Aeotec to craft Z-Wave’s smallest, most extensible, and yet most capable security sensor.

Optimised Battery Life
It has the best battery life ever found in a feature-packed zwave door sensor. Wireless is convenient but having to change batteries too often is annoying. That’s why Door / Window Sensor 7 features a unique balance of hardware and software optimizations which allow it to use up to 66% less battery power to communicate via Z-Wave Plus. It’s German engineering at its very best.

ZWave hub required
Door / Window Sensor 7 uses Z-Wave Plus to communicate wirelessly. That means you’ll need a Z-Wave hub to use it.

This Works Well as a Mailbox Sensor
I bought the Aeotec Door & Window Sensor to use as a Mailbox Sensor, and it works very well. In order to get the Z-Wave signal to reach all the way to my mailbox, I also had to buy the Aeotec Range Extender 7. That’s a Z-Wave Repeater.I tried many other contact sensors, repeaters and WiFi Sensors, but the cooldown time was never fast enough. This contact sensor has SmartStart so it awakens from standby mode very fast. The Z-Wave signal also travels about twice as far as Zigbee. This makes the sensor a great choice if you’re planning on putting it far away from your home Hub. Also, this sensor has a tamper resistant shell, and you’re notified if anyone tampers with the sensor.The signal and sensor work so well that if I open the mailbox door about an inch, it registers that the contact sensor is open. I live in South Dakota, so I can tell you that this sensor operates in the rain and cold. I hope this helps anyone else who is looking for a good Mailbox Sensor.

Pain in the backside to install but works great once you get it working.
I really miss the little triangular sensors Aeotec used to sell. They were so easy to pair, charge, and reset if needed. I had one of those go bad and had to be replaced. I got one of these thinking it would be just as good. It works great once you get it working. It’s a pain to get it to pair, the pairing button is hard to reach when you have it mounted. It was hit-and-miss getting it paired. I use homeassistant and zwave-js-ui. I have over 70 zwave devices in my network. This little sensor was one of the most aggravating to get working. But now that it’s paired, it works great. Just get ready to pull some hair out with this. But it will eventually work.

Magnet to sensor distance
The magnet does need to be quite close to the sensor for it to detect it. The door I installed the sensor on pushed the limit of this distance so it took a while to get it working properly.

Make sure you use the right batteries
While the sensor itself works well, there are some issues with replacement batteries.The manual on Aeotec’s website says this takes a “1/2 AA” battery. However, there are multiple battery types that are “1/2 AA”.* ER14250 (3.6v)* CR14250 (3.0v)The photos on the product listing show an ER14250 battery. The paper manual that came with my most recent purchase says it takes the CR14250.I suspect Aeotec revised the hardware to change the battery type at some point, but did not create a new model number. Of the 4 sensors I own with the same model #, 1 of them works with the ER14250, and 3 of them only seem to work with CR14250

Odd alignment weak signal.
It puts out a very weak signal so it has to be extremely close to the hub in order to work. Also the magnet trigger is oddly aligned. You have to mount the sensor and magnet at an offset very odd design.

Couldn’t pair with Hub
I bought four of these and could only get one to pair with my Zwave hub and when paired it was inconsistent with status updates back to the hub. Like many other reviews here these are junk and I’m now trying to return all four for a refund.

Battery check; DOA, replacement ordered
Battery that came with this has a date of 9/18/2020 … Not surprised this is DOA. Hopefully the replacement will work. The replacement didn’t work. Same battery expiration date. Amazon gave me a credit to buy fresh batteries. That worked! Getting this to connect with the Z-wave hub was a little challenging, but finally got it working.

Not connecting as door sensor
Bought 2 of these are non would connect to my SmartThings as a door sensor. Kept coming up as a light switch or generic sensor and did nothing
