Fast, quiet, easy, reliable
Initial thoughts:-setup: very easy. Had to pull out each toner cartridge to break off some tabs that helds things still for shipping, and pull out some plastic; took about 5 mins without needing to look at instructions. I did look at them later and it was straightforward.-size/weight: a lot heavier than I expected, but its the same size at it looks.-add to wifi: you can run a setup and connect to the printer from your PC or phone and use that to change the wifi on your printer, or you can add it manually via the small one line LCD screen. I did it this way; it will definitely be painful for anyone with crazy long passwords with extra symbols like me. It was easy, just a lot of hitting the down-arrow icon looking for next character. But it added immediately, and was available immediately for search from my PC.-printing: it prints fast and its very quiet, Enough so that when I print to it (its directly behind my wife’s desk) she doesn’t notice. You can definitely hear it, but its quiet enough to blend in to background noise.-print quality: documents look sharp, icons etc look good both in color and black and white-print quality, photos: used some laserjet photo paper and printed out a picture: I’ll put it in the ‘good enough for a postcard or to send your mom her annual family pic to frame’. Definitely not the color sharpness/brightness you’d get from CVS, but not expecting that, either. We will likely use it for our next party invite instead of going to UPS store to print.-mobile printing; TBD, haven’t tried-duplex printing: TBD, haven’t tried-toner life: we probably won’t need new toner for 6+ months and I’ll try to update then.Overall, it does everything I expect it to at the level I expected.If you need a general/workhorse printer capable of printing anything at a reasonably decent level- this is likely the printer for you.If you are looking to print pictures to frame; get a color inkjet. Or just keep printing @ CVS which is likely cheaper anyway.

After comparing several Brother color laser models (the L3220CDW, L3230CDW, and the higher-end L3280CDW), I ultimately chose the HL-L3220CDW because the feature differences simply didn’t justify the extra cost for my specific needs. I purposely did not install Brother’s full software suite because it usually includes unnecessary utilities. Instead, I connected the printer to my Wi-Fi network directly from the control panel. Within seconds:Windows 11 PC detected it via Wi-Fi and installed the built-in Windows drivermacOS (Mac Mini M4) immediately recognized it via AirPrintiPhone also picked it up automatically using AirPrintNo USB cable required, no CD, no bloatware. Everything worked flawlessly across all devices.Print Quality (For Color Documents)For what this machine is designed for — text, graphics, and business documents — the output is very clean. Text is sharp, color blocks are consistent, and toner adhesion is solid on standard 20–24 lb paper. Again, it’s not meant for photo printing, and that’s perfectly fine for me.Why I Switched From InkjetMy old inkjet required a cleaning cycle almost every time I printed, especially after a few days of inactivity. The clogged heads and wasted ink drove me to finally switch to a laser. The HL-L3220CDW completely eliminates that problem. It can sit idle for weeks and still print instantly with no maintenance.Noise & SpeedFirst page out is fast for a color laser of this sizePrint engine is reasonably quietWarm-up time is minimalFor a compact unit, performance is excellent.Toner CostsThe only downside is the price of original OEM toner.A full set of four cartridges costs almost the same as the printer itself. For that reason, I will be using third-party toners once the originals run out. I’ve had years of trouble-free experience with generic toners in other printers, so I’m not concerned.Final ThoughtsPicked it up on a Black Friday sale, which made the value even stronger.If you need a compact, dependable, low-maintenance color laser primarily for documents — and you’re tired of clogged inkjet heads — this model is a fantastic choice. Easy setup, great compatibility across devices, and solid performance make it a very good buy.UPDATE : After a few weeks of usage ; Still love the machine, however the pages are very curled when the come out of the printer ; it also has a rear exit path , this reduces the curl effect slightly.

Continues to just print. Last week I felt really sorry when I saw someone had discarded an inkjet printer box from another brand, they’re going to be paying through the nose for ink, suffering DRM nonsense and awful required software on their computers… not with this one. This is my third Brother printer – first was replaced with a colour printer, and is still running though about 10 years old now. This one is for another location and is just as good. Setup was simple and everything just works, Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS all detected and printed first try!
