Really good scanner for converting documents to digital.
This is a fantastic little scanner for what I use it for. I started converting all of my paper documents to digital. This scanner is a real workhorse. Fast too. Easy to set up on Windows 11. The scanned documents look great. I’ve scanned dozens of documents in a very short period of time. For its size, image quality and speed, it is a great value for the money. Highly recommend.

Beware: Software is trash unless you pay $70+tax for an upgrade
As the title says, the supplied software is absolute garbage. It’s called IrisScan16 and it is an outdated mess leftover from Windows XP or WIndows10. The start scan button is barely clickable because the aspect ratio is off. If you want the latest IrisScan23, you’ve got to pay $70+tax. For me that raises the total unit cost to nearly $300. For $369, I could buy a top end Epson scanner that comes with working software and support right out of the box. The scan quality was OK, but honestly it was such as hassle using this with the broken software and desktop USB only connection options that it really is not worth the asking price. Also worth noting, this is “IrisScan, part of the Canon brand family.” and it appears that Canon bought a decent little scanner company and has made it into an orphaned acquisition with very little corporate support.

Scan Quality and Speed Okay, Setup Complexity and Instructions Not Okay
This scanner is an example of how the manufacturer can do some things very well and other things horribly. The scanner in a box that was meant for use in any country in the world, so everything is in about a dozen or more languages, which would not be a problem, but they essentially told you nothing in a dozen or more languages. The box included the scanner, a power adapter with a bayonet plug, three different snap in plugs for the adapter (for different countries), a USB A to Micro USB cable (yes Micro USB in 2024), a guidebook, a spare feed sensor window (at least that is what I will call it), and a guide for flat feeding the scanner. Those last two items took some serious effort to determine how they were used – I found documentation on the feed sensor part, but just guessed correctly about the guide since the rear of the scanner had some holes that matched up with the tabs on the part and the labeling on it gave me some clues although it has some cutouts for what I must assume are a WPS button and a reset button that are not present on the scanner, the full set of instructions you also need to download (in addition to the other files you must download which is I discuss below) doesn’t mention putting the rear guide in place, but does mention it being in the rear. I as able to decipher that they want you to plug in the scanner to what they called the alimentation cable (that would be power for most of us) and to the USB cable connected to the computer, then power up the scanner before, installing the software. There is a 1GB file (yes 1 GB, so I hope your internet connection is unmetered) you need to download by going to the web address that is on a sticker applied to the scanner. You will also need to download the manual for the Button Manager which is separate from the other manual. They never mention that you probably want to open the scanner and extend the paper guides and holder beforehand, but okay. A word of caution, the paper guides, and holder are pretty flimsy, so it would be best to be careful with them. Installing the software and drivers involves opening the huge downloaded file (which apparently is not terribly popular, as your virus scanner may warn you it is little used) and then installing five (yes five) different items, assuming you want all the functions of the scanner. Moreover, the installation programs look a little like relics from the days when third party installers were used. They include ReadIris (the scanning software), CardIris (card scanning software), button manager, the scanner drivers, and capture tool. You have to go through installing all of them and two even require you to put in your information for registration. The button manager lets you set up the functions that you can select to have the scanner perform when you push the scan button, although fortunately it comes up with pre-selected options. Once you have everything installed you can select a scanning function with the right and left arrows on the control panel (right side of the scanner) and push scan. The scanner is reasonably fast and the scans look good. They say 20 PPM, which might be pretty close, but the guides limit the number of pages you can stack up in the feeder, so if you have a large number of pages you want in one document, you will likely be assembling them in the software around 20 at a time. The product page listing did not call this a portable scanner, but it is listed as such on the Iriscan web page. The Readiris software seems to be solidly functional and provides a number of features to work with PDF files. There must be separate downloadable manuals for Readiris, Cardiris, and Capture Tool, but the files are not in the same place as the hardware and Button Tool manuals. So, what you get for about $200 is a somewhat portable scanner (it weighs 3.2 lbs. without the power supply or cable) that has decent scanning speed and does quality scans, but has an overly complicated setup, poor instructions, a micro USB port connection, and far too many separate programs and manuals.

includes features the cheaper scanners do not have
Scanner is compact but I wouldn’t call it portable. It seems robust enough to last. It scans 20 pages per minute and saves time when scanning a bunch of documents. The duplex feature is a plus as you don’t have to refeed your double-sided documents back through for a second pass. It is packed with features that the cheaper ones do not have such as scanning to different formats and the pdf editor is an added bonus as that software can get pricey when purchased separately. I have used this device for a few months now and very happy with the ease of setup and functionality. I would recommend this product.

Scans well, not really portable, display already defective
Nice compact desktop scanner. I wouldn’t call it portable necessarily. The document scans are sharp and the duplex scanning is a nice feature. The software is dated. It does work, but there are several steps that you need to take for everything to work and the software is not very intuitive. The PDF output is nice and the scanner software does work well with OCR and de-skewing images. The small function screen on the unit died within 1 day. It worked for about an hour, then flickered, and is now completely dark rendering the built-in buttons used for workflow automation useless, and I just have to use the software itself to setup scans.Pros:- Really good duplex scanning, document OCR.- Scanning speed is really good, especially at 300 dpi and less.- Small compact, (but not really portable)- Comes with a assortment of power adapters for different countries.- Guides and paper drive works well, as does the auto document feeder.- Software is very configurable for scanning and is relatively fast.Cons:- Display is dead, rendering the ‘automated workflow’ buttons on the scanner useless- Software is dated and a bit complex, but very functional- This is still using micro-USB! It’s 2024, let’s move on to USB C, please!- Not really what I would call ‘portable’. Having to use a USB cable and a power adapter with no battery restricts its portability.- I wish this had Wi-Fi and a battery. That would truly make this portable.
