Bigger, better, and quieter than the regular Smart Oven
Our Breville Smart Oven BOV800XL finally broke after 10 years of almost daily use, so it was time to replace it. Another Breville, no question – but which one? The newer Breville model (BOV900BSSUSC, the one in this review) seemed like the obvious choice, but I was afraid it wouldn’t fit on the counter or it would get too hot under the cabinets.Short answer: It fits! It doesn’t get too hot! It works great! Best choice! How did I live without it??Long answer, for those who like to overanalyze everything (not that I’d know anything about that…):*** How big is it? ***- Width: 21.5″- Depth: 15″ not including handle, 17.25″ with handle- Height: 12.375″ not including handle, 12.75″ with handleSee the attached pictures for how it compares with the BOV800XL.*** How loud is it? ***Quieter than the old one. The older 800XL convection fan was loud and almost rattled. The new one has 2 fans: one to cool the electronics and one for convection. Even with both fans, cooking with normal convection is pretty quiet. Airfry turns the convection fan up to 11 and makes a serious whoosh. I don’t use airfry much (regular convection works just as well for most things we cook), so it’s not a big deal. You want numbers? I got numbers. With the decibel meter sitting on the counter next to the oven:Baseline room noise: 33dBOven, no convection: 55dB (mostly the electronics fan)Convection: 57 dBAirfry mode: 69 dB(Note that when the fan first starts, it’s louder, maybe 66dB, for 1-2 seconds until it gets up to speed. That’s how the old 800XL fan sounded all the time.)Check out the attached video if you want to actually hear it.*** How hot does it get? ***After 15 minutes of convection roast at 450°F:- Top front: 215°F- Top back: 160°F- Sides: 140°F- Glass: 235°F- Door: 220°F (top and sides), 170°F (bottom)- Back: 135°F- Wall behind it, a few inches away: 90°F- Cabinet above, 7″ clearance: 90°FThe cabinet above it does get warmish inside, so if you store your chocolate or cooking oils or other heat-sensitive stuff there, you might have a problem.*** How well does it work? ***Great! Having a 2nd oven is amazing for when I don’t want to heat the big one, or need to cook things at 2 different temperatures, or need to keep something warm while the rest of the food finishes cooking. This oven has 10 settings, but I use only a few of them:- Toast: Slower than a toaster, but cooks the slices evenly.- Bake/roast: Temperate is accurate, cooks mostly evenly (there’s a slightly hotter spot in the front right).- Airfry: I never had a standalone airfryer, so I can’t compare. It does make things crispier compared with normal convection. Usually I just use the airfry basket with the fan on normal convection, and that seems fine.- Slow cook: Never used it.- Reheat: As far I as I can tell, the only difference between reheat and bake/roast is that for reheat, the timer starts when the oven starts heating. For bake and roast, the timer starts after the oven is already heated. Subtle difference, but surprisingly convenient for not overcooking your leftovers.tl;dr: Oven is good. I like it.

Great counter top oven
My wife really likes this oven. Easy to use and very versatile for different cooking of foods.Good size for kitchen counter too.Replaced our old toaster with this unit.Well designed and thought out unit. The unit comes with a good “cook book” with guidance for the different cooking functions.Comes with several racks including one for air frying, pizza and toast.Quicker than heating regular oven for many foods.Great quality.

The best cookin tool I had so far
This oven is the perfect size, with all functions for the most exigent cook master. Working perfectly and almost no noise, even in convection mode. I was happy with my smaller Breville oven, but this machine is superior not only in the diversity, but also in all manufacturing, actually Pro.

One of the best kitchen tools available.
This is our second Smart Air Fryer Pro. The first was used every single day as a toaster, air fryer and oven. We used it for hours through the day, seven days a week for over seven years. It was a workhorse. Unfortunately one of the ceramic heating elements cracked and even though I probably could have replaced the part myself, it was getting up there in age. We opted to get an identical one to replace the first. This thing is a beast. It cooks extremely well. It’s not huge but can handle decent size meals. Once preheated, it keeps the temperature consistent – even better than our gas stove.I can’t promote this anymore than I have, other than to say it’s a great product which is completely worth the initial cost.We also own a ten year old smart oven in another kitchen and a nice Breville espresso maker. Both are as high quality as the Pro and have been chugging along for years.

UPDATED!!!!! Great oven, (WAS) terrible (BUT NOW NOT) customer service from Breville
*PLEASE SEE LAST PARAGRAH FOR UPDATED REVIEW*SEP25 – I have owned this oven for three years now and have loved it! It’s been a workhorse and an essential tool in the kitchen combined with my cooktop. Easy to use, perfect size (not too much of a foot print but can cook a decent sized turkey), air fryer function gets everything nice and crispy, super convection cooks fast…it’s wonderful! I did a fair amount of research before paying the $320 for it in SEP2022. It was a big investment for me and a pricy oven for the size but I felt it was worth it. Some reviews complained of steam coming from the door and vents. That did happen to me but I understand that to be a normal function. Some customers had issues with temperature reduction over time causing longer cooking periods. Happily, I didn’t have that issue in 3 years. However, what I don’t like about this oven is due to Breville itself. While cleaning the oven I BARELY touched the lower quartz heating element with a rag while wiping off the guards around the element and it shattered. I thought I was being careful. Take caution to not even make the slightest contact with these elements – they are unreasonably fragile!!! I have tried to contact Breville for replacement parts – they do NOT respond. I called, I tried their online chat (a chat agent is never available), and when I requested a callback after calling them 2 minutes after opening business hours (amazingly their call volume was too high at that early time to take my call), they never called back after saying they would “in a of couple hours”. Research online has revealed others that had the same issue with the heating elements and cannot get replacement parts because Breville is not permitting this. I did find a replacement heating element with a part number that said it would work for this model for $20. It ended up being a couple inches short and was clearly for a smaller, probably discontinued or older, model likely before the Breville parts crack-down. A heating element should be something a customer should be able to replace, especially when they are this fragile and could be considered a consumable part. It is wrong in my opinion for Breville to not give customers this option and restrict replacement parts to pans and air fry baskets. The alternatives are to send the entire oven in for repair (who pays for that when the warranty is over and how much?) or purchase a new one. It’s disappointing for this to be a “throw away” item for such a simple fix. I work hard for my money and value it. It’s no small thing to drop $320 (now it’s $400) on a fancy toaster oven for some of us. Just let me repair it on my own, Breville. Make the parts available.Breville customer service and conscious efforts at preventing customers the ability for reasonable repairs, and also enabling an eco-UNFRIENDLY throw away society, would be 1 star or less. But I can’t deny the oven worked great and was something I recommended to others. I loved it. That would have been 5 star review.UPDATE NOV 25 – I have updated my 3 star rating to 4 stars. As stated above, this is a great oven and well worth the money for its functionality and performance for my application. After making contact with Breville customer support, I can NO longer complain about their service as adamantly. First off, my dodgy voicemail system didn’t notify that Breville DID call me back several hours after my initial call. A week later I found out that they tried calling twice so this was not their fault that I didn’t receive those messages. I am still bothered that they have a chat function that is useless but when I did call Breville back following their voice messages, they weren’t available immediately but did return my call later as promised. I explained my issue with the heating element and the customer service rep arranged to have a box sent to me to send the unit to them for repair, at their cost. A few days later I received a box in the mail to pack up the oven and less than 2 weeks later was returned an oven in terrific working order. I was very happy about this. My Breville oven was well missed when it was broken and I am very happy to have a repaired solution and without any hassle or hidden repair fees or costs to myself. I would give this 4.5 stars if it were possible. Why not 5?- because I still think a small part like an element should be available to buy for the technically inclined like myself to do our own repairs. What if I hadn’t received such a positive response from Breville? Also, restricting parts enables a throw away culture. Meanwhile, I still highly recommend this oven but don’t touch those heating elements. Ever!

We live the full time tiny home life, we purchased this as a full time oven, this is the best purchase we’ve made for this lifestyle. The door actually seals all the way, the heat is perfectly accurate, it’s extremely easy to set up and it looks amazing. The price of this nearly scared us away, we purchased the larger sized one, I’m so glad we went with it.As soon as you start pulling it out of the box you can see, and feel, the difference in quality. We were using one of those cheaper convection ovens and compared to this we may as well have been using a candle under a plate. We’ve burned through a lot of ovens, of varrying quality, and this is hands down the best we’ve purchased. It maintains an even temperature, though it does remind you to turn your food, and can even fit our Dutch oven with the lid on. The other extra wide oven we used couldn’t fit the lid and took forever to cook anything in it.If you’re using this for the tiny home lifestyle I highly recommend it, we have been blown away by the quality of the oven and how well if evenly cooks our foods. You can tell they put a lot of thought into making this and it’s on a totally different level compared to all of its competitors. I can’t speak as to how long the oven lasts, we’ve only had it for a few weeks, but you can see it’s build to last a lifetime. If you’re only using it part time you may want to go with something cheaper, it you’re looking for something to actually use as an oven then hit the buy now button, you won’t regret it.Edit on February 16th 2023.This over is still going strong and works exactly like it did when we bought it. We use it heavily and none of the markings have worn off and it still cooks to perfection. This is hands down the best Amazon purchase I’ve ever made.

We love this and barely use our oven now. Air frying works as good as a standalone air fryer, we’ve made bread, pizza, roasted veggies, chicken, salmon, etc in it and it all came out perfect.

Purchased it for my wife. She loves it. Uses it more often than our big oven. Great built quality. Very happy with it.
