Easy to use, automatic image detection makes multi-page scanning a breeze
This is a review of the D800 Portable Document Camera: High Definition 13MP Document Scanner USB Visualizer Capture Size A3 Multilingual OCR Detection for Remote Lessons Office and Education, Not Compatible with MacI was impressed by the integration between the hardware and scanning software. I’ve used past scanners that don’t integrate well with the PC scanning software. I faced no issues on installation and use of the image. The workflow is intuitive and a breeze to use!The camera is high definition, and can easily capture any details on the page. The software settings allow users to set the appropriate resolution for either black and white or color scans.

    Worked perfectly. Great value.
LED lights were very bright for scanning old archive documents. It was easy to transport on research trips. Larger scanning format was helpful to get legal and file folders.

    Large format scanner
Easy to set up. Very easy to use. This scanner makes my projects easier and higher quality. The option of overhead or tilted lighting solved all the problems I had before. It’s also great for scanning books.

    Portable
I needed the scanner for pictures I was incorporating into a funeral program for my mom. Some of our pictures were 8 x 10 and there was no printer/scanner at my dad’s house, so I ordered this one. It was easy to use and produce good pictures for the program.

I tested this document scanner and I will mention my observations below. To summarize, it works very well for its intended purpose but there is still some room for improvement. I am giving it 4.5 stars which I rounded up to 5 stars.I am using a PC with Windows 11 and this document scanner is compatible with my PC. The user manual says that the recommended systems are Windows 7/Windows 8/Windows 10 with a minimum system requirement of Windows XP SP3.When I plugged in the scanner, I thought that my PC did not recognize the camera because I cannot see any evidence that it was detected by my PC. However, I realized that the scanner is connected to my PC after I installed the ScanLine software from the included USB flash drive. The user manual is very helpful in explaining how to use the software if you need help with the various available functions.I noticed that the scanner works better on flat objects with a matte surface. I tried scanning some flat sports cards with a glossy surface and noticed that the scan did not look natural. The result looked heavily compressed in my eyes. But when I scanned a flat object with a matte surface, I was very happy with the results. The scanner can track the object you placed on the black mat that came with the scanner. The tracking works even if you move the object around the black mat. It can also track multiple objects (such as several business cards) placed on the black mat at the same time. The purpose of the “tracking” that I mentioned is for the automatic cropping function. You can also do manual cropping or turn off the cropping feature. However, cropping can only be done in a rectangular or square shape. Thus, the automatic cropping is not accurate if the object does not have perfectly straight and parallel edges. There is an “edge fixing” function if you want the software to automatically fix the cropping for you. However, it blurs some areas of the outer edges when doing so. This is not an issue if the areas close to the edges are blank. But if there is writing on the edges, the writing will be blurred. The blurring only happened on the areas by the extreme edges that are not perfectly straight and parallel. The advertised maximum document size is A3, which is approximately 11.7 x 16.5 inches. However, I was able to scan a document with a size of 11.5 x 17 inches without any issues. There was some writing at the edges and it was still captured by the scan. It looked like even if my document was 12 x 17 inches, the scanner can still accommodate it. But your mileage may vary because the manufacturer only guarantees a maximum document size of A3.The scanner has its own lighting and it made a difference in how the scans look. There are three levels of brightness for the lighting. You can toggle the brightness level by pressing the button with the light bulb icon on the scanner. There is a USB-A and USB-B slot on the scanner with a compatible cable that was included. You have to use the USB-B slot for the scanner to work. The connection to your PC is USB-A. If your PC only has USB-C, you will need a USB-A to C adapter.I am not sure why there is a USB-A slot on the scanner. I did not use it and I was still able to scan. The user manual called the USB-A slot a “USB hub for External Button Connection.”The scanner came with its own box and was double boxed by Amazon. I am happy that the scanner has its own box for ease of storage and transportation. The scanner is also relatively light and portable. Amazon used a box that is almost the same size as the scanner’s box so it did not move around while in transit. I appreciate that level of care from Amazon.Although I am very happy with the scanner’s performance, there is still some room for improvement in my opinion. I wish that the software allowed for images to be outputted as a PNG file. The software only allows for JPG and PDF images. I’m not an expert in this topic but I believe that JPG and PDF images are compressed while PNG images are uncompressed. Compression makes the images less sharp especially when zooming in. That is important for me because I am using the scanner to scan artwork. Hopefully, the software can be updated to support PNG images in future releases.
