Quality drives great value for storage
Bought 4 of these drives for a NAS I put in at home, these drives are top quality.Drives worked perfectly, fit the trays well and seated in just fine.Drives are relatively quiet for HDDs and are even more so in an enclosure.Speed, data transfer, formatting, all work great.Great value and quality construction, I have and will continue to recommend this product.

Clean new drives, but unclear warranty status
Solid packaging, device legitimately unused according to SMART/health data. One little red flag here is that US warranty checks with Seagate itself fail (sends you to the retailer), hinting that this might be an import or coming through non-retail channels, which may or may not be an issue for buyers.

Beware purchasing HD from this seller
I’ve had this hard drive for a little over 6 months and its never worked. I personally believe that this is absolutely ridiculous with how expensive this particular hard drive isWhen I first got it I spent weeks trying to figure it out in my off time. It was weird why my NAS wouldn’t event recognize this hard drive when it could recognize all the other hard drives/ram I put in itLater when I did have some free time I bought another product to connect this HD with a computer . I thought I needed to possibly reformat/change settings on this hard drive on a PC connection then it might finally play nice in the serverTo my surprise this expensive HDD didn’t even show up on my computer at all and made the most unuusual/aggressive sounds that I don’t even hear owning 3 other HDD. When I tried with 2 other computers it was the same deal. The HD wouldn’t even be recognized even when it was powered upSo that’s when I knew that I didn’t have a formatting problem that led to some HD not even working/ being recognized. This was straight up dead on deliveryThen I also just read that some “new” HDD from brands like Seagate are being sold with decade old components, found many people who bought new HDD from Amazon but were actually used! etc. (If you are even thinking about buying a HD from Amazon please read this tech radar article and be warned)

The Sweet Spot for capacity and $/GB:
I’ve gone through three 8 TB Iron Wolf HDDs, and they last for many years, very heavy rebuild after rebuild after rebuild. Those 8 TB are open to air, and the 16 TB are helium sealed, which is less friction and cooler. I have a NAS populated with 8 TB’s, and am replacing with 14 TB’s in a RAID 5. I have actual backups, plural. I have read that when all HDDs are 14 TB, I can expand the capacity of my RAID 5, which is one of those, I will believe it when I see it.

    One of 5 were DOA
In total I’ve ordered 5 and of these 1 was DOA.2 I ordered 6 months ago are running strong.1 I ordered recently was DOA so I returned it and ordered 2 more, both which work. The packaging was different each order and one required a signature but the other 4 didn’t. This raises questions about whether it’s the same group shipping them each time and whether I’m getting a brand new product or not. However, it works so I’m happy.

    Noisy
This thing is super noisy. It’s easily twice as loud as my 8tb. Also, even though it’s 16tb you only get a little over 14tb, common in the industry but still misleading.

    Good product -great amazon help
First one sent was defective (the first in about last 30 I bought). Not a problem, defects occur. What was great is that amazon got a replacement to me in only two days! Outstanding service amazon!

After reading other reviews I confess I was a little concerned, but I purchased two and they both work perfectly on my Synology 920+.The Seagate IronWolf are a bit noisy; I don’t know if there are quieter NAS HDDs.

Frive was dead on arrival, they sent a replacement which does work fine but it’s annoying to deal with.

Unnecessary backstory..After shelling out £700 to a company to “rescue” the data on a damaged, 5TB external hard-drive.I did a little research and found that hard-drives are less accident-prone when they’re “naked” i.e. uncased. However, uncased aka internal hard-drives require 1-5 bay hard-drive enclosures.I bought a Yottamaster enclosure – which found fault with both my 5TB and 16TB hard-drives.The instruction manual was exclusive to Windows OS, and it’s website help links were dead!So I returned the Yottamaster forthwith – and bought a Terramaster instead – which is much better. However, that too doesn’t recognise the 16TB Seagate hard-drive – it’s just too (beaucoup) big.Obviously, the problem isn’t with the Seagate 16TB Iron-wolf. Just be aware that most hard-drive enclosures won’t ‘work with’ a 16TB hard-drive – despite their sales promises. But if anyone does have an ‘enclosure’ that can accommodate a 16TB hard-drive, please do enlighten me!
