no more 3rd party drive restrictions. device works great.
Synology updated their firmware to now again allow 3rd party drives. Keep this in mind when reading older reviews. This machine runs great.

Don’t call it NAS
Pros: New model Amazon accepted returnCons: Only Synology branded HDDs supported. No 3rd party When made my ordered, no Synology HDDs were avail. due lack of inventory HDDs from older DS worked read-only mode due it 3rd party brand No new addins (git especially really lame)After almost 15 years of using Synology, that was my last box.I wonder if the person who made the decision to restrict 3rd party HDDs is still employed?

Good Little NAS, Questionable Product Team Decisions
FIRST OF ALL, NOW SUPPORTS THIRD PARTY DRIVES.I’ve had a few Synology NASs before and love the DSM operating system. This one is ok, but could be a lot better of Synology would just stopping getting in their own way and treat this segment as something more than an afterthought the don’t care about. I’d give this one five stars but:- One Star deduction for removing support for hardware transcoding. C’mon Synology, the hardware supports it, remove the block. Did you learn nothing from the “only supports Synology hard drives” fiasco?- One Star deduction for being behind the curve on processors. If you’re already familiar with Synology DSM software and like me don’t want to mess around with learning a different OS, this isn’t a bad NAS. If you’re not and are starting from scratch with their software, I would consider a different manufacturer. I’ve been a big fan of Synology in the past, but the really seem like they couldn’t care less about the Home/Small Business segment.

Only compatible with Synolgoy Drves!!!
It won’t let you set up any drive other than Synology drives unless they are migrated from a previous NAS Version that allowed them! Also constantly gives a warning that my drives (IronWolfs) are only working because they were migrated from a previous NAS, but they need to be replaced by Synology Drives ASAP. And doesn’t show any health data for my Drives.

Running great with Ironwolf drives!
Just got this NAS recently. loving it so far! I put 2 Seagate Iron wolf NAS drives in it and its running great. Did a quick google search for hard drive compatibility issue and found the solution. Very easy to fix. Hopefully at some point for their own good they will open the NAS up to more non-Synology drives. It’s in their best interest not to piss off their customers. 🙂 Good luck and remember google is your friend!

Supports any drive again (ie. Seagate ironWolf), a great NAS solution again!
Disregard the older reviews that state you need to use a branded drive, I was in the process of looking at alternate options due to this, but they reversed course on this and now allow any drive. I installed a pair of Seagate IronWolf 8TB NAS drives and they worked just fine. They have a lock on the easiest to use UI and management by far, this is a great starter NAS and works great for many uses! This does still support many packages and container manager, but it would be best to leverage only official packages and possible very light containers to reserve resources for core function. Use a separate device with Proxmox or other with Docker instead for other server based needs.
