Installation into the NAS as easy and simple and within 5 mins I was powering …
Purchased 2 – 5TB drives for use in Netgear ReadyNAS 102 2 bay device for family use, archiving and backups.Drives were received packaged individually in their own box with standard electrostatic bag. Being for NAS I did not need added mounting rails and/or cables and each drive was well packed and supported within it’s own box by use of end-caps that raised each to fit the middle of the box. Both drives were registered on the Wester Digital ‘Products’ page and both SN’s were clean and unused. Installation into the NAS as easy and simple and within 5 mins I was powering on the NAS to being the long process of setup and initial synchronization, which ended up taking roughly 13 hours to complete (while using and copying files to the drives).2 drives in RAID1 Mirror are working great and checking for the often reviewed IDLE3 parameters showed only 1 LLC upon starting up and after 2 days of use, managing my backups and archives of files; they remain as they should with no noticeable issues or errors withing S.M.A.R.T. status. So far these have performed as I had hoped and are running beautifully. Both drives were manufactured Feb 29, 2016 (Leap Day Drives!) so I I will fully expect 15 years of warranty vs the regular 3 years advertised. I mean, honestly they only age 1 year every 4 years, lol (kidding WD)If anything changes during their use; I’ll update this review but I’m already not expecting to do so.

Really upset about purchase
I am absolutely furious with my purchase on this drive. I usually do not post reviews but I had to make an exception for this one. After install this drive, I started a plex media server on it. After my content was placed on the drive, approximately 2 weeks after, further write to the drive was hampered. I proceeded to run the WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostics. Quick test showed that everything was fine, however the complete test did not even run for 5 minutes without failing. The results are shown below -Test Option: QUICK TESTModel Number: WDC WD50EFRX-68L0BN1Unit Serial Number: WD-WX41DA55S9V6Firmware Number: 82.00A82Capacity: 5000.98 GBSMART Status: PASSTest Result: PASSTest Time: 09:03:29, April 23, 2016Test Option: EXTENDED TESTModel Number: WDC WD50EFRX-68L0BN1Unit Serial Number: WD-WX41DA55S9V6Firmware Number: 82.00A82Capacity: 5000.98 GBSMART Status: PASSTest Result: FAILTest Error Code: 08-Too many bad sectors detected.Test Time: 09:07:19, April 23, 2016Now I have a disk with brand new drive with bad sectors. I am really upset about this. What can be done?

A+ drives
I have had multiple WD Red drives for a personal media server as well as my main desktop pc and they are solid. Currently I have 3 WD Red 5TB drives and they vary in age from 1 year to 3 years. So far zero failures and extremely minimal bit failures given the age of the drives. I wouldn’t personally recommend this for a boot drive to run windows off of but as a storage device it is phoenominal. I have used them to house games especially larger ones (Skyrim with 100+ mods being around 60-70GB) and it has never lagged or caused issues gaming. I have also used them to house media being streaming up to 7 1080P streams at once and had no issues. In sum up for media storage on a personal computer or in a server environment these are spectacular drivers with long life spans. WD has my vote and my business for years to come if their products continue working as well as my experience has shown.

Work Well with Diskless WD Cloud Raid Server
I bought two of these for a Western Digital Cloud EX raid drive. It was a better price if I bought the drives separate from the hardware. They dropped into the WD Cloud product easily and after the drives were initialized they were up and running. The entire process took just a few minutes and I have been using the drives with that system for a few months not. So far they seem to be good drives and they are reasonably priced.

Really Glad I Bought These
I bought six of these for a NAS. As such they are on 24/7. I have had them in this configuration for roughly six months. That’s not very long for drives I realize, however I wanted to get my review out there.Individually these aren’t the fastest — And that’s fine and expected, they are NAS drives. Throw them in a RAID (I’m using ZRAID-2 which is ZFSs “RAID” which can tolerate two disk failures) and the fireworks start. These things hammer my network connection and it makes me start thinking about 10Gbps copper. They are also very quiet. With six of them running, the two case fans I have (120mm) and the power supply fan (IHaveNoIdeaButItsSmaller mm) which themselves are quiet, are louder than the drives. Truth is I can’t hear the drives except when they are writing/reading for extended periods.

5TB, Good price point, great for HTPC
I’ve had this for a few months now. Ran a check disk as soon as I got it. Not one single issue found with it (yay). This went into my HTPC and stores TV/Movies. It’s quick and the price per space was worth it. Packaging was as expected, so that’s good. So far so good.

Superb reliability in a Synology DS212j
A friend gave me his old Synology DS212j, and being new to NAS I was timid about what drive I should buy. I did a lot of research and the WD Red series seems to be the favorite. So I bought two 3 TBs, set up the RAID using Synology’s software, and I was up and running in 30 minutes. The drives are super quiet, and don’t consume much power at all. They hibernate when inactive, and only require maybe 5 seconds to spin up and get to work. I’m very pleased.I filled up my 3 TB drives and now I’m in the market for the 6 TB drives, and I would definitely buy WD Reds again.

One of my NAS drives stopped working… so i’ve decided to upgrade not just this drive but the rest of the drives… I ordered 3 WD50EFRX drives ( i wanted 4 but was limited to 3 by amazon)I ordered the drives of Saturday and received them by Wednesday (it was an overseas delivery which is quite impressive !)The drives are working great and i manage to get 120mb/sec transfer rate on raid 5 configuration on top of qnap 469 pro. the formatted capacity of the drives is 4.5tb which makes the raid 5 of the 3 drives 9tb.The only downsize of the deal is the pricing… when i bought them the price of each was 170euro but when i wanted to add an extra drive to make it 4 drives (2 days later..) i discovered that the price went u to 208 and even 220 euro per drive…(thats including the 25 years celebration of amazon… – i expected the price to be lower but it just got higher…)Anyway… these drives are great product – you just need to find the perfect timing for the price to be right.
